Does Fluoride Treatment Harm Teeth?

Updated: Jan 10, 2021

The benefit of using fluoride is to help prevent tooth decay, especially in children whom may have less than ideal brushing techniques and habits. The CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL states that the usage of fluoride to prevent cavities is one of the 10 greatest public health achievements in the 20th century.

Fluoride can help people of all ages in the prevention of cavities. They can be found in tooth paste and mouth rinses.

It is also a natural element found in ground water and the oceans. It has been shown by the US SURGEON GENERAL for DISEASE CONTROL that using fluoride is safe and effective.

It also saves people money because the money spent of fluoride would only be a fraction of the cost of any dental treatment!

Here at our dentist office in Yucaipa, we recommended that fluoride treatment be done after your dental teeth cleanings. Your dental hygienist will remove plaque, calculus, and stains - it is when your teeth are free of debris that we recommend professional-grade fluoride treatment (and/or teeth whitening) to be done for maximum effect.

Otherwise you may be putting fluoride (or whitening products) on your plaque which will have little to no effect on some parts of your teeth!

In addition, there is a strong link between cardiovascular disease and gum/periodontal disease. Therefore, it is important that you come in every 6 months or less to get your checkup and teeth cleanings done - it can help reduce the risk of heart attacks.

Most dental insurance cover your routine cleanings for all ages! So come give us a visit!
